Egyptian, Russian Face Charges of Spying for Israel
An Egyptian and a Russian faced charges in Cairo Tuesday of spying for Israel, with the Egyptian summoned before the high state security court and the Russian prosecuted in his absence, Prosecutor Hisham Badawi said.
The Russian is a former military officer, who is accused of having recruited the Egyptian, an engineer, in Spain in the last several years to spy for Mossad, according to the charge sheet.
The Russian was said to be outside Egypt but his exact whereabouts were not disclosed.
The two are accused of "spying for Mossad, having received funds from Mossad to supply information on the political, economic and military situation in Egypt, and harming the nation's interests," the charge sheet said -- CAIRO (AFP)
