Fahd, Arafat Discuss Situation in Palestinian Territories
Saudi King Fahd and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat talked Saturday about the situation in the Palestinian territories, Saudi agency SPA said.
The two men also talked about the Islamic, Arab world and international scene, in the presence of Saudi and Palestinian officials.
Arafat, his minister of international cooperation Nabil Shaath and one of his advisers Nabil Abu Rudeina arrived in Riyadh during the day.
According to SPA, Arafat met Crown Prince Abdullah and later, the Riyadh region governor, Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, with whom he discussed the means of continuing the Intifada, or uprising, in the Palestinian territories.
More than 300 people have been killed in ten weeks of violent clashes between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Palestinian ambassador in Riyadh Mustapha Sheikh Dib told AFP Arafat would ask Saudi officials to press Washington for the sending of a protection force to the Palestinian territories.
On Monday SPA reported Saudi Arabia has granted 26 million dollars to the families of victims of the Intifada in the Palestinian territories.
The donation was part of the fundraising campaign in solidarity with the Palestinians which has reaped 66 million dollars, of which 10.7 million were donated by Saudi King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah.
Since November, the oil-rich kingdom has granted the Palestinian Authority 30 million dollars and has contributed 250 million to two solidarity funds for the Palestinians worth a total of one billion dollars – RIYADH (AFP)
