Manual acts an authentic resource for practicing
and future dental professionals
The FDI World Dental Federation today unveiled its first Dental Ethics Manual at the 2007 FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai. The new manual is part of the federation’s efforts and mission to advance and promote the ethics, art, science and practice of dentistry.
The FDI Dental Ethics Manual was unveiled during a special luncheon at Drum Lounge at Sheikh Rashid Hall of Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICC). The ceremony was attended by top officials of FDI World Dental Federation, members of FDI Dubai 2007 Organizing Committee and other dignitaries.
The manual emphasises the importance of professional ethics and the need for ethical values as a part of dental education curriculum. The manual acts as a textbook for both graduate and post-graduate dental programmes and is a veritable resource guide for dental professionals.
In its efforts to leading the world to optimal health, the federation commissioned the writing of Dental Ethics Manual in 2006. The Manual is authored by Prof John Williams with the support of the FDI Working Group on Ethics and Legislation and an advisory panel.
Dr Michele Aerden, President of FDI World Dental Federation, said: “Dental education and training will never be complete unless the curricula of dental schools incorporate a course on dental and medical ethics. The FDI trusts that this Manual will become a source of reference for dental students and practitioners alike.”
Dr Aerden added: “This Manual does not list what is right and what is wrong, but provides values and practical examples that will give food for thought and will guide practitioners in making sound ethical decisions in the best interests of their patients.”
In his comments, Dr Ahmed Al Banna – Deputy Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Chairman of Hospitality and Media Committees, FDI Dubai 2007, said: “It is a matter of great privilege that the first-ever FDI Dental Ethics Manual was unveiled during the Annual World Dental Congress in Dubai. We are confident that the manual will help professionals in shaping the future of dental practice.”
The Dental Ethics Manual is divided into six chapters -- Principal features of dental ethic, Dentists and patients, Dentists and society, Dentists and colleagues, Ethics and research and Responsibilities of dentists and the future of dental ethics.
The author, Prof Williams, has a lot of experience in ethics, includes his stint as Director of Ethics at Canadian Medical Association and also as the head of the medical ethics unit launched by the World Medical Association in 2003.
The Publication of this Manual was made possible by an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson Oral Health Products.
A free copy of the Dental Ethics Manual is available at the FDI World Dental Press at the FDI Pavilion in the concourse of DICC.
