Firas Ibn Raad on “Hawa Amman FM”: Amman Marathon is one of the Most Important International Marathons
Prince Firas Ibn Raad, Member of the Board of Trustees of Samsung Amman International Marathon, said that the Marathon is taking place for the 2nd year running, and now, it is considered as one of the most important international races, well known among the professional runners regionally and internationally; it receives support from the International Athletics Federation (IAAF).
He added, during the program "Amman this Morning", that one of the Marathon's goals, which is to be launched on 22 October 2010, is to deep root the everyday sports culture, especially running owing to its great health benefits, and in light of the doctors warnings from the diseases resulting from lack of exercise".
During the program presented by Ahmad Faheem, the Prince said: "We have been contemplating the idea of holding such an event in Amman for many years; thus, the initiative on the part of the Society for Care of Neurological Patients (SCNP) and Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), was launched as the first international marathon in Amman, and patronized by a Royal entity, Amman's centennial.
He further added "This year we are looking forward to organizing a more successful marathon with larger attendance under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania to make this marathon an opportunity to orient the participants from Arab and foreign countries on Amman and its historic landmarks".
The Prince stated that the Marathon also aims at creating and discovering new local runners, promoting competition among them and other Arab and foreign runners. He pointed out that last year, the Jordanian runner, Methgal Abbadi, from the army forces recorded a high score in 2 hours and 26 minutes.
He clarified: "This year, there will be more participation from the Jordanian army and the Public Security, other authorities, as well as governmental agencies and GAM".
Prince Firas commended the efforts and support extended by the Marathon patrons and sponsors from both public and private sectors, above all, His Majesty King Abdullah II, GAM, the Olympic committee, Jordan Athletics Federation, and the Higher Council of Youth. From the private sector, Samsung Company, the official sponsor of Samsung Amman International Marathon, Arab Bank, Zain, Al abdali Co., Regency Hotel, Flod Co., and Aquafina.
On his part, Director of the Marathon, Mr. Samir Farkouh, said that the Marathon organizers prepared special prizes for the media representatives to ensure best coverage, photo, and press release. There will be specially designated sites for the media representatives to cover the event properly and professionally.
As for the participation base of the challenged people, Farkouh declared that there will be an active participation from the disabled segment, their involvement in such sportive undertaking is welcome and appreciated, be they from Amman or other governorates of the Kingdom, and if needed the management will provide them with the necessary transportation.
Farkouh explained that the Marathon is divided into 3 levels, the 42.195 km Marathon, the official race and approved by the IAAF, it kicks off at 6:30 a.m. from Greater Amman Municipality headquarters, the Fun Run, a 10 km race, starting from the Royal Culture Center at 10:00 a.m., and the 4 km kids run, at 11:00 a.m., from Abdullah Al Salem Al Sabah (Al Qeisiyeh Circle). All the level finished at Greater Amman Municipality headquarters within a festive and cheerful atmosphere.
