Flash Floods Kill Seven in Northern Iran
Flash floods triggered by torrential rains Friday have killed seven in the northern Iranian city of Kolaleh, a local source said Saturday.
Abol-Qassem Safavi, head of the provincial natural disasters department, told the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, that 14 villages around Kolaleh had been severely hit by floods that disrupted gas and water deliveries.
Safavi added that the floods had also cut the main road link between Tehran and Iran's northeastern border with Turkmenistan.
At least 34 people have been reported killed and many others injured in floods that have hit the north and northwest regions of Iran in recent weeks, said the agency.
The areas affected have reportedly incurred substantial material damage.
In contrast, slight rainfalls have brought relief to millions of Iranians in other parts of the country who have endured the effects of a crippling dry spell, said to be the worst in the past 30 years, said the agency - Albawaba.com
