Former Israeli PM Peres Planning to Meet With Arafat
Former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres is planning to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in a bid to try to quell the deadly violence in the Palestinian territories, an aide to Peres told AFP Tuesday.
"There is an agreement in principle to meet, but a time and venue for the meeting have not been set," said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A spokesman for Peres, Yoram Duri, said efforts were being made to organize a meeting, saying: "The purpose of the meeting is to stop the violence and renew the peace negotiations."
It would be the first such high level encounter since the Sharm el-Sheikh summit on October 17 attended by Arafat and Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
Duri said the last time that Peres and Arafat spoke on the phone was shortly after the Camp David summit collapsed in late July -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
