French President Urges Mubarak to Release Homosexuals
The French President, Jacques Chirac, has expressed concern regarding the imprisonment of homosexuals in Egypt.
According to BBC reports, a statement issued by President Chirac's office said that during discussions held in Paris, Chirac told Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, that, without wishing to interfere in Egyptian issues, he hoped that the twenty-three homosexual men, who were convicted last November for sexual immorality could be released.
They, and twenty-nine other men, who were acquitted, had been detained in a police raid on a floating nightclub on the Nile, which was commonly accepted to be a meeting spot for homosexual men.
Homosexuality is not illegal in Egypt, however it is seen as shameful by the vast majority of the Egyptian society. (Albawaba.com)
