The three-member team from HMC was led by Dr. Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, consultant cardiac surgeon, and also included Dr. Alex Tuli Kohn, consultant intensivist and Dr. Amal Al Sisi, consultant pediatric cardiology and a former staff member at HMC.
”During our visit to Al Thawra, General Hospital in Sanaa, Yemen from March 5 to 12 of this year, the HMC medical team performed 19 open heart surgeries, as well as 13 invasive procedures on children, some of whom were suffering from congenital heart problems,” said Dr. Al Khulaifi.
HMC’s collaboration with the General Hospital at Sanaa, Yemen began more than three years ago, when the latter requested HMC through Dr. Al Khulaifi to extend specialized cardiac care to Yemen. This would be provided by HMC doctors who would visit Sanaa and perform a number of surgeries every year.
This year’s visit to Yemen by HMC’s specialized cardiac team was the fourth such visit. The last visit was in August 2009 when the doctors successfully performed 24 open heart surgeries on adult patients. The current visit has been sponsored by a Qatari national.
“The successful visit highlights the significant role played by HMC in healthcare in the region,” Al Khulaifi stated. “Qatar is fast becoming a major center for reference and the dissemination of advanced medical expertise in the GCC and internationally.
“HMC’s kind gesture has been well received by the medical sector in Yemen, which has immense faith in Qatar’s ability to send more specialized medical teams in the future,” said Dr. Alex Tuli Kohn, who played a key role in the early rehabilitation of surgical intensive care patients in Yemen.
