Iran Navy Begins Gulf Maneuvers
The Iranian navy began four days of war games Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil routes, as well as the Sea of Oman, the official IRNA news agency said.
It cited Moharram Maghoul, commander of the naval base in the Gulf port of Bandar Abbas, as saying that some 1,000 personnel would be taking part in the maneuvers, including teams of divers.
"The departure of ships and especially submarines from their bases ... will mark the first day of the exercises," he said.
Iran holds naval exercises every year to mark the November 27 date when Iranian warships were attacked by Iraqi and US forces at the start of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
