Iran - US talks focus on Iraq security
Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad and Head of Iranian negotiating team with the US delegation, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, said on Tuesday that the theme of the second round of Tehran-Washington talks is "restoration of security to Iraq."
In an interview with IRNA, he said the first round of talks focused on how to fully support Iraq's democratic government, reconstruction of Iraq with collaboration of Iraqi officials as well as restoring stability and security to the war-shattered country.
It is predicted that in the second round of Iran-US talks the issues remaining from the first round would be dealt with and the two sides would exchange views on latest developments in the country, he said.
Referring to his talks with Iraqi officials prior to the second round of Iran-US talks, he said the Iraqi officials were quite optimistic about the trend of direct talks and wished the negotiations would help alleviate the sufferings of the Iraqi people and help restore stability to the country.
"Given the complexity of security affairs in Iraq, he said in case such security problems are resolved it would be quite useful for the US," he said.
The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that restoration of security to Iraq would only be materialized by a powerful and democratic government, he said. "Given that Iraq's security is among responsibilities of the Iraqi government, then interference of aliens forces is regarded as illegal," he said.
