Iraq PM forms new political alliance
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has formed a new political alliance ahead of the general elections scheduled for January 2009, a senior official in his Dawa party said on Thursday. According to AFP, Hassan al-Sined told a gathering of candidates in central Baghdad that the new State of Law alliance included 40 political parties and movements, including Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish groupings.
Earlier this year, Iraqi voters rejected Shiite religious parties in provincial balloting. Later, Al-Maliki declared that he was breaking ranks with the Shiite alliance that dominated his ruling coalition, instead planning to launch a multi-confessional bloc including Sunni tribal leaders for the next election.
