Iraq: Some 20 dead in attacks, clashes
A suicide car bomber blew himself up Saturday outside an Iraqi police officer's home north of Baghdad, killing at least six people and injuring at least a dozen, police said. According to The AP, the suicide bomber, accompanied by another five cars loaded with heavily armed men, slammed into a wall outside the home of Lt. Muthana al-Shaker - a member of a special forces unit - in Samarra, 100 kms north of Baghdad, said Lt. Qassim Mohammed of the Samarra police.
All those killed were on the street when the attack took place. Al-Shaker was not injured, Mohammed said.
Two resistance fighters were killed when a roadside bomb they were planting outside al-Shaker's house after the attack blew up, he said.
Meanwhile, the bodies of eight Iraqi policemen and five Shiite poultry vendors were found in two separate areas near the capital, said security sources and relatives. The policemen, who had been manning a checkpoint on the road between Ramadi and the Syrian border to the west, were found at 8:00 am (0400 GMT) Saturday after they had been kidnapped by armed men the day before, Lieutenant Colonel Ziad Khalaf said, according to AFP.
And five Iraqi Shiites buying poultry from farms south of Baghdad for resale in the capital were found dead near a river in the Triangle of Death area, a relative of two of them said.
In other violence, a civilian was killed and four wounded in clashes between US and Iraqi forces and gunmen in Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq after a roadside bomb attack against a US military convoy, said Captain Chaker Mohammed of the local police.
An Iraqi Kurdish contractor was shot dead and another wounded in a drive-by shooting south of the northern city of Kirkuk, a police officer said.
In another incident, a firefight between police commandos and an unknown number of attackers in western Baghdad left two policemen dead and three wounded early Saturday, a defense ministry source said.
