Israel arrests Bedouin officer on suspicion of spying for Hizbullah; Hizbullah refuses to comment
A lieutenant colonel in the Israeli army was recently arrested by the Shin Bet Security Service on suspicion of syping for Hizbullah, the Israeli media reported Wednesday.
He was indicted Thursday morning. Indictments are expected against six others suspected of syping for the Lebanese movement.
The Israeli officer allegedly provided Hizbullah with information on the army's deployment along the Lebanese border in exchange for money and drugs, the reports added.
Ten other suspects were arrested in connection with this case, the reports said, among them several Israeli military officials. Israeli Army sources said "this was one of the worst spying cases to ever be uncovered in Israel."
According to Israeli police sources, the officer and the other ten are Bedouin Arabs from a town in Israel’s Galilee region.
When contacted by the Lebanese media, Hizbullah officials had no comment.
Meanehile, a senior Hizbullah official warned Wednesday that any Israeli attack on a disputed water pumping project near the border in southern Lebanon will ignite the entire front with the Jewish state.
"Any (Israeli) aggression on the Wazzani amounts to an Israeli decision to open the entire northern front," Mohammed Raad, the head of Hizbullah's nine-member parliamentary bloc told The Associated Press.
The legislator said Hizbullah's attacks have for now been confined to Israeli soldiers in the occupied Chebaa Farms area. "If the Israelis want to expand the confrontation, we are ready for it. Any aggression on Hizbullah or on the Wazzani installations will lead to opening the entire front," Raad added.
Raad described as "foolish" and "cowboy" US threats to target Hizbullah in the US campaign against global terrorism. "But we deal seriously with the possibility of a US military strike against Hizbullah," he said. Raad said Hizbullah would not disarm "as long as there is any possibility of Israeli threats against Lebanon." (Albawaba.com)
