The Israeli army replied to automatic fire aimed at a Jewish area near Jerusalem, and one settler was wounded in an attack on his car, military sources said Monday.
The army replied to automatic fire aimed at the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo, the sources said.
"Our forces replied to several bursts of automatic fire, which damaged an apartment, at Gilo from Beit Jala," the neighboring autonomous Palestinian area in the West Bank, the source said.
A Palestinian source said an Israeli tank fired shells and soldiers opened fire with heavy machine guns, but an Israeli army spokesman told AFP the soldiers "used grenade launchers and heavy machine guns against targets in Beit Jala.
In a separate incident near the West Bank settlement of Ariel, to the east of Tel Aviv, a settler was wounded in the leg while driving his car when a Palestinian opened fire with an automatic weapon.
He was taken to hospital in Israel, and the army searched the area, the sources said – JERUSALEM (AFP)
