Israeli forces raid Gaza Strip town, two Palestinians, including boy, killed
Israeli forces launched an invasion of different parts of the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah, in which two Palestinians, including a boy were killed and 14 others were wounded. Additionally, several Palestinian homes were completely demolished, and arable lands were bulldozed.
Awni Kaloub, a well-known member of the Popular Resistance Committee - an umbrella body of resistance groups - was killed early Thursday in an explosion at his house in Rafah.
Palestinian security officials said he was apparently preparing a bomb that exploded prematurely. Seven of his relatives in the house were injured, they said. Later, Palestinian sources said he was hit by an Israeli tank shell.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old Palestinian boy was killed and three other pupils were wounded also Thursday by Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip. Muhammad Othman and three other Palestinians were shot in Tel Zurub neighborhood in Rafah city, WAFA reported.
The boys were on their way to school. According to the news agency, Othman was shot in the chest. The wounded were described to be in moderate to serious condition.
On his part, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat condemned Rafah raid.
"They say they want to leave Gaza, but before leaving they are increasing their massacres against our people," he said. "These actions are a part of sabotaging the peace process and continuing the brutal attacks on our people day and night."
Earlier Thursday morning, Israeli forces moved into the southern section of the Rafah refugee camp in search of "tunnels" they claim are used for "smuggling weapons".
Meanwhile, an Israeli settler was lightly wounded when a Qassam rocket landed in the Gaza Strip settlement of Netzarim Thursday morning. (Albawaba.com)
