Italy Expels 700 Illegal Immigrants
Italy expelled 697 illegal immigrants, including 405 Albanians, in the past week, police announced Sunday.
Other nationalities in the group identified by police include 62 Tunisians, 53 Romanians and 39 Iranians.
Meantime, authorities arrested another 52 illegal immigrants who had arrived along the coast earlier Sunday, and said they planned to deport another 50 people, including 23 Albanians.
Some 16,100 illegal immigrants landed on the Italian coast between January and June 2000 -- sharply down on the same period last year, when some 35,189 illegal immigrants were tallied by Italian authorities.
A total of 70,000 illegal immigrants have been identified by authorities in the first seven months this year, 37,210 of whom have been expelled - ROME (AFP)
