Leading Postgraduate University Reaches Out to Omani Students
Omani students will have the opportunity to learn more about one of the Middle East’s leading research-based universities this week, at the Gulf Higher Education Exhibition (GHEDEX), which starts today at the Oman International Trade & Exhibition Centre.
The British University in Dubai (BUiD) offers a diverse range of range of scholarships for Masters Programmes beginning in September 2006, and is actively looking for interested Omani students interested in taking up the opportunities.
BUiD provides postgraduate degree programmes and Continuing Professional Development programmes in a range of disciplines, and has already received a significant number of applications from Oman. Executives at the University are confident that the participation in GHEDEX will help to further stimulate the high levels of interest.
“In 2005, there were 1,150 Omani students who elected to study in the UK, primarily because of the quality of the education and the range of life experiences on offer. One of the things we’re looking to do at GHEDEX is to demonstrate that the same style and quality of postgraduate education is available within the region,” said David Lock, BUiD’s registrar and acting chief executive.
“Our courses have been developed to support specific sectors in the Middle East, such as engineering, IT and education, where there is a strong demand for further education and development, so understandably we encounter a great deal of interest within Oman,” he added.
BUiD degree programmes are based on similar international quality programmes that are offered in its partner universities, which include the University of Edinburgh, the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, Cardiff University and the Cass Business School of City University, London.
The University was established to facilitate access to world class education, training and research in the Middle East. It offers cutting-edge education and research in key disciplines, including IT, engineering, banking and finance, the Built Environment and education.
The British University in Dubai (BUiD) is the Middle East’s first research-based, postgraduate university. The University was established to facilitate access to world-class education, training and research in the Middle East. BUiD aspires to the highest, internationally recognized British standards as reflected in its partnership with the University of Edinburgh, the University of Birmingham, the University of Manchester, Cardiff University and now the Cass Business School at City University, London. Each has a five or five-star rating in the UK national Research Assessment Exercise that signifies research of international standard.
The not-for-profit university offers full and part-time Masters Degree programmes and Continuing Professional Development courses in Information Technology, Project Management, the Built Environment and Education. Subject to accreditation, a new Masters programme in Finance and Banking and IT Management will be offered in spring 2006.
All BUiD’s current Masters Programmes have received Accreditation Eligibility Status from the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s Commission for Academic Accreditation.
The founders of the University are the Al Maktoum Foundation, the Dubai Development and Investment Authority, Rolls-Royce, the British Business Group and the National Bank of Dubai. The University is managed by a provisional council under the chairmanship of Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
The Emirates Group, DUCAB, Atkins and Dubai Duty Free are supporters of the university through financial contributions or the provision of scholarships.
