At least 13 killed in blast north of Baghdad as three Marines dies
A car bomb blew up in the town of Khalis on Tuesday, killing at least 13 people attending a wake for victims of a previous attack, hospital officials said. On Sunday two people were killed and two wounded in this town, located near the city of Baqouba some 40 km north of Baghdad.
Earlier it was reported that two US marines were killed in action and one died later from injuries sustained during an operation in an Iraqi province.
"Two marines assigned to First Marine Expeditionary Force were killed in action and one marine died of wounds received in action Monday in the (centre-west) Al-Anbar province while conducting security and stability operations," the US military said in a statement, published Tuesday.
The marines have now lost 10 men in just over one week on various operations around Al-Anbar province.
Meanwhile, American occupation troops killed an Iraqi child and injured another after they fired on a car that failed to stop at a checkpoint in Baghdad, the US army stated.
"Soldiers fired on the vehicle after the driver failed to obey verbal and visual instructions to stop, switched off the vehicle lights, and forced guards out of the way as he attempted to bypass the checkpoint," a U.S. military declaration said, according to Reuters.
It said the incident happened late on Monday.
The statement said the mother and the injured child were taken to hospital while the father, who was driving, was questioned by police.
In the town of Latifiya, south of Baghdad, two police officers were seriously wounded Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on their patrol car before fleeing, said police Lt. Hazim Abdul-Kadhim.
In the town of Yayieji, about 30 kilometers southwest of the northern city of Kirkuk, a roadside bomb went off, just missing an Iraqi police car, but severely injuring a bystander, according to Col. Sarhat Qadir from the Kirkuk police force.
Four blasts were heard outside Fallujah on Tuesday, but the nature of them was not known. (albawaba.com)
