Lebanon's Top Shiite Cleric Hospitalized
Sheikh Mohammad Mehdi Shamseddin, chairman of the superior council of Lebanon's Shiite community, was hospitalized on Sunday, according to a statement from the council.
Sheikh Shamseddin is to undergo surgery at the American University of Beirut hospital, the statement said, without providing further details.
He has headed the council since 1978, following the disappearance of his predecessor, Mussa Sadr, while on a trip to Libya. He was officially named to the post in 1994 - BEIRUT (AFP)
