Nearly 30 thousand Palestinians demonstrated Friday in Palestine refugee camp in Damascus in protest against the Israeli air raids on the West Bank and Gaza Thursday.
The demonstration brought together representatives of all Palestinian factions including the Islamic movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
The demonstrators called for Palestinian unity while others urged Arafat not to attend a planned summit in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt denouncing the Egyptian president for hosting the summit. The demonstration set off after Friday prayers at a nearby mosque where the Imam (Moslem clergyman) called for Jihad and protection of Al-Aqsa mosque.
Palestinian faction leaders managed to keep the demonstration within the boundaries of the camp.
However other demonstrations were expected later Friday to head to the American embassy.
