Preparations for Syria’s National Referendum to be Announced Thursday
By Nabil Al Mulhem
Syrian parliament speaker, Abdul Qader Qaddoura, will announce Thursday the preparations for a national referendum on the election of Bashar Assad to succeed his father, late president Hafez Assad.
The People’s Assembly’s press office said Qaddoura will explain the procedures of the referendum at a press conference. The referendum, due to be held in the first week of July, will be the last constitutional step needed to enable the younger Assad to hold the reigns of power in Syria.
On June 25th, the People’s Assembly will meet to endorse Bashar’s nomination for presidency by the ruling Baath party, which elected him on Tuesday as secretary general of its 21-member regional command.
The People’s Assembly met on June 10th, the day Assad died, and amended an article in the constitution, bringing down the age of an eligible presidential candidate from 40 to 34. The change paved the way for Bashar to succeed his father as Syria’s top man.
According to the Syrian constitution, a referendum should be conducted within 90 days after the death of the president – Albawaba.com
