As part of the organization's commitment to sustainability and responsible urban development, and in line with the ambition driving Doha's Bid for the 2013 World Chambers Congress, the Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry (QCCI) is sponsoring a number of important initiatives to support research and expansion of green technology and other sustainable industries.

The Doha 2013's bid for the 8th World Chambers Congress, the world's largest gathering of international chambers of commerce and business support groups, is based on the idea of hosting a completely green conference. The bid book, delivered last month to the World Chambers Federation Congress Selection Committee members, is printed entirely on recycled paper, and the bid leaders are committed to minimizing the carbon footprint of the congress.

Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry's bid is also designed with a specific focus on ecological preservation, a goal that has been pursued by the State of Qatar itself through its development. Many Qatari organizations and Qatar Chamber member companies have signed on to the United Nations Environmental Programme's drive for sustainable development, which encourages member states to reduce carbon emissions from buildings and establish worldwide sustainable development assessment systems.

"We support the efforts of the UN Environmental Programme and look forward to finding ways that we can improve our own green efforts. This is a cooperative effort towards an important cause, and we are pursuing these principles on all fronts as we work towards hosting the World Chambers Congress" said Sheikh Khalifa Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry Chairman. "Preserving and protecting the environment is an essential pillar in sustainable development for the future."

Many other Qatar Chamber member organizations have made great strides in recent years towards a more sustainable approach to business and commerce. Qatar Airways, the flagship airline carrier for the State of Qatar, recently completed the first commercial flight using fuel made from natural gas.

Among other plans, Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry is set to sponsor the Qatar International Environment protection Technologies & Sustainable Energy Exhibition (ecoQ) taking place on 17-19 September 2011 at the Doha International Exhibition Center.

In addition, the Qatar Chamber recently sponsored "The Humanisation of Cities of Tomorrow" conference in Doha, as part of the organization's philosophy of supporting green initiatives in the country and throughout the region. "Our participation in these various events and our plans moving forward are part of our commitment to green development and sustainability," said Sheikh Khalifa. "This is significant for our country and the region, it is the way of the future, and Qatar Chamber of Commerce & Industry intends to lead the way."

Guided by the National Vision of 2030, Qatar will continue to take steady steps in the milestone of pursuing Human Development for a sustainable, prosperous society and Environmental Development to balance economic growth, social development and environmental protection.
