Rains Rescue Syria from Drought
The recent rains and snow rescued 1 million hectares of agricultural land in the northern part of Syria, al-Hayat daily reports.
These lands are mainly used for grain cultivation. Official sources estimate that the crop from these fields are worth some SP3 billion (SP50=$1). The following are the rain quantities in the country's northern region since the beginning of the current season:
* Al-Hasakeh 35 mm (compared to 19 mm last season)
* Al-Malkiyyeh 188 mm (52 mm)
* Ras al-Ain 63 mm (15 mm)
On a less positive note, the heavy showers and storms damaged many citrus trees in the coastal cities of Tartous and Latakia. It is estimated that about 21,000 dunams of citrus orchards were damaged and some 1,850 tons of fruit were lost.
