Syria’s main opposition says 200 civilians are trapped in a mosque in a suburb of Damascus as fighting rages outside between fighters and forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.
Syrian activists, meanwhile, said mortar shells landed in three separate Damascus districts, killing one person and wounding several others.
The attacks coincided with Syrian army strikes on the Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees on the edge of the city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
IThe Syrian Coalition called on the UN in a statement to send “a strong warning” to Assad that he “must immediately release” the civilians trapped in the mosque in the Damascus suburb of Qaboun.
It warned that thousands of civilians in Qaboun could be “massacred” by Assad’s army, as armored vehicles and elite forces move into the neighborhood.
The Observatory said fighting in Qaboun had caused casualties.
Elsewhere in the country, the Red Cross delivered 5,000 rations of food to Aleppo’s central prison. Fighters allowed them to bring in rations for Ramadan, the Observatory said.
Fighters have been seeking to capture the prison and free around 4,000 people inside, who include political prisoners.
The Observatory reported continued fighting throughout Syria, including in the northwestern province of Idlib, where a man and his three children were killed by a helicopter gunship raid.
