Report: Absence of Mubarak, Abdullah Due to Security Reasons
Jordanian King Abdullah and Egyptian President Mubarak will not attend the Arab summit because of security reasons, Arab League officials told AFP on Wednesday.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher told the official Petra News Agency in a telephone interview from Beirut that Abdullah's reason for staying in Amman is "not political," refering to speculations that his absence from the summit is due to a move Tuesday by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon that effectively blocks Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat from attending the two-day summit.
Abdullah will be represented by his prime minister, Ali Abul-Ragheb.
Earlier this month, Israeli sources said Mubarak was warned that radical groups in Lebanon were plotting attack against the summit. The prime designated targets were the Egyptian ruler and King Abdullah of Jordan, the report said. These reports had no other confirmation. (Albawaba.com)
