Report: Kuwait Resists US Appeals for New Arms Deals
Kuwait has again signaled that it will resist US appeals for new arms deals, reported the Middle East Newsline (MENL)on Sunday.
Officials said the Gulf state would not embark on major military purchases despite pressure from Washington and several Western nations.
They said Kuwait was continuing to hold off on new commitments until it completed a review of military requirements, according to the news service.
The review is being conducted by Kuwaiti Defense Minister Jabber Mubarak Al Sabah, said MENL.
Mubarak said weapons procurement would be driven by military needs rather than political pressure.
The minister said in remarks reported by the Kuwaiti media that the Gulf state would not rule out a single source of arms supplies if this was required to bolster military strength.
At the same time, Mubarak said Kuwait had not signed weapons deals in an attempt to please certain countries. The minister did not elaborate – Albawaba.com
