Saudi Urges US to Exert Pressure to Stop Israel
Saudi Arabia on Monday urged the United States, co-sponsor of the Middle East peace process, to exert pressure on Israel to put an end to the ongoing clashes with Palestinians.
"The Saudi kingdom calls on all those countries wanting peace, notably the United States, a sponsor of the Middle East peace process, to play a crucial role in ending Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people," said the Saudi cabinet, headed by King Fahd.
The cabinet said that such a contribution from the United States "will help advance the peace process that Israel is trying to derail by ignoring all the accords" struck with the Palestinians.
King Fahd, quoted by the official SPA news agency, expressed "his deep regret at Israel's policy of continuing its odious aggression and its use of its huge war machine against the unarmed Palestinian people, against innocent children, women and the old".
Saudi Arabia has soundly condemned the violence that broke out on September 28 and which has cost more than 150 lives, all but a handful Palestinian, and left more than 4,000 other people injured.
The kingdom was the first country to donate 250 million dollars to two funds created by its own initiative in the recent Arab summit in Cairo to help support the Palestinians -- RIYADH (AFP)
