Seven Die, 14 Injured in Pipeline Explosion in Nigeria
Seven people were killed and 14 others injured this week when an oil pipeline exploded due to a leakage in southeast Nigeria, press reports said Thursday.
The explosion on Monday at Umudike in Imo State spilled oil into the environment, killing animals and destroying farmlands, the Vanguard and other papers reported.
The explosion was caused by a leakage from a pipeline belonging to an unnamed oil company operating in the area, the papers said.
The victims were mostly villagers going to their farms when the explosion occurred, they said.
Officials of the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation were not immediately available Thursday to comment on the incident -- LAGOS, (AFP)
