Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Syrian President Bashar Assad ended their awaited meeting on the sidelines of the Amman Arab summit before 6:00 local time (4:00 GMT) on Tuesday, according to a Jordanian official close to the talks.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the meeting focused on three axes: the way both countries should deal with the new US administration, standing against Israel's new government, and coordinating Syrian and Palestinian peace negotiation with Israel.
Palestinian Minister of Information Yasser Abd Rabbo confirmed the meeting at the presser he held Tuesday afternoon, but said it was a very brief meeting at which the two leaders agreed to meet officially after the banquet to be held by Jordan’s King Abdullah for the visiting delegations later in the day.
Amid reports of disagreement between the two sides, Assad said in his address to the summit that he wanted both parties to forget the past and start a new chapter in their relations.
