Sudan: Former minister arrested
Sudan's National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) announced the detention of former assistant to the president, Mubarak Al Fadil Al Mahadi and a number of retired military officers amongst them Gen Mohammed Ali Hamid who had worked as deputy manager for the security organ in 1980s. Amongst detainees also former minister of tourism Abdel Galil Al Basha.
The motive for the detentions was information they have been involved in planning to "destabilize security and causing unrest in national capital Khartoum," Sudan Media Centre reported.
According to the reports, the suspects have divided Khartoum to a number of zones to execute their plans. NISS sources said that 14 persons are currently under investigation. The source added security authorities have been monitoring plotters since April 2007. He said security bodies have carried out the arrests at this specific time to prevent lots of security impacts and to protect sate, nation and public interest. The source also revealed that security authorities have monitored a number of contacts by the detainees with some foreign countries, without naming them.
