Syria: Presidential referendum on May 27
The Syrian People's Assembly (Parliament) on Friday approved unanimously the nomination of the Regional Secretary of the Baath Arab Socialist party, Dr. Bashar al-Assad for seven-year new constitutional presidential term of office, starting from July 17th , 2007.
The People's Assembly determined May 27th as the date for conducting popular referendum on the presidency, SANA reported.
Assad is the sole candidate for the "yes'' or "no'' referendum.
The party, which nominated Assad on Thursday at the opening session of the new parliament, called the nomination an "expression of the Syrian people's rallying around its leadership to strengthen the national policies.''
