Twelve Killed in Violence in Algeria
Clashes between Islamic extremists and security forces have claimed another 12 lives in Algeria, press reports said Thursday.
In attacks blamed on Islamic extremists, a police officer was killed at a false roadblock Tuesday near Tizi Ouzou, the capital of the northeastern Kabylie region, while an armed civilian guard was killed near Medea, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Algiers, newspapers said.
Ten Islamic extremists were killed Tuesday and Wednesday in a security forces sweep near northwestern Tlemcen, the daily El Watan reported.
Elsewhere, a soldier was seriously wounded Wednesday in a clash with an armed group near Tizi Ouzou, the reports said.
Some 900 people have been killed, including 200 Islamic extremists, since a six-month amnesty called by the government for the fighters expired on January 13 - ALGIERS (AFP)
