UN envoy: Syria and Lebanon should fulfill all provisions in UN Resolution 1559

The UN envoy to the Middle East on Friday said Syria and Lebanon should fulfill “without delay” all provisions in UN Resolution 1559, which demands an end to foreign interference in Lebanon’s government.
Terje Roed-Larsen told the UN Security Council in New York that the Syrian pullout was “unquestionably momentous events” in the Middle East, but it was also a precondition for the Beirut government to regain control over its own territory and sovereignty.
“The withdrawal of foreign forces is a precondition for the restoration of the full sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Lebanon,” Roed-Larsen told the council, according to international news agencies.
The pullout should also lead to Lebanon's “free and credible” parliamentary elections, which are set for the end of next month, the envoy conveyed.
“Allow me to reiterate the (UN) secretary-general’s call urging all parties concerned to comply with all requirements of Resolution 1559,” he said.
