UN secretary general calls to lift Gaza siege
The UN secretary general on Sunday condemned the Israeli-imposed siege on the Gaza Strip, calling the blockade unsustainable and wrong. Visiting the coastal strip, Ban Ki-moon said the siege "causes unacceptable suffering," AFP reported. "I have repeatedly made it quite clear to Israel's leaders that the Israeli policy of closure is not sustainable and that it's wrong."
Ban said he was saddened that teenagers and children were the ones to be most-adversely affected by the restrictions. He also said it was "quite distressing" for him to see the rubble of the houses destroyed by Israel's offensive in 2008 against the Gaza Strip.
