US, allied ships sail through Suez
Nine United States and allied navy ships sailed through the Suez Canal into the Red Sea, canal authorities said Sunday.
Five US military supply ships as well as two French ships, an Italian destroyer and a Spanish frigate all crossed the canal overnight Saturday, according to the authorities. Their exact destination was not provided.
The US ships were identified as MV 2nd LT John P. Bobo, SS SGT Matej Kocak, SS PFC Eugene A. Obregon, USNS 1st LT Harry L. Martin, and the SS MAJ Stephen W. Pless from the US Military Sealift Command, according to AFP.
These are among 17 container and roll-on/roll-off ships, which in turn are part of the 41 ships in the pre-positioning program, according to the US Navy.
France's refueling ship Meuse and frigate Aconit as well as the Italian destroyer ITS Mimbelli and Spanish frigate SPS Canarias also sailed through the canal toward the Gulf region, the authorities said. (Albawaba.com)
