US special envoy: Sudan peace will bring progress towards normal ties

Peace in Sudan would bring progress towards normal relations with the United States, United States special envoy John Danforth said in Cairo Wednesday.

"There would clearly be progress towards major change in the relations between the two countries," Danforth told reporters after meeting with Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa when asked if peace would mean that US sanctions on the east African country would be lifted.

"The position of the United States is that if there is peace and if there is cooperation with respect to anti-terrorism ... plus humanitarian access (to conflict zones) -- those are the issues on which normal relations would hinge, " Danforth said, according to AFP.

Washington is now represented in Sudan at the charge d'affaires level. (Albawaba.com)
