Report: The US plans to bomb Syria for three days
A short and focused strike on Syria? Not quite. Reports released today suggest that a US military campaign in the country might be a bit longer and bit more expansive than that.
According to an article in Al Akhbar today, the US military action in Syria will last for three days. The campaign will kick off with a barrage of heavy missile strikes on key Syrian targets. This initial strike will be followed by additional attacks on targets that may have been missed or remain standing.
American air force bombers, as well as five US missile destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea are in position to launch cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles, well out of the range of the Syrian army. The ships can carry 90-96 Tomahawk missiles, each with a range of 1,000 miles.
International support for a strike while not swelling to a crescendo, is steadily growing. US Secretary of State John Kerry said earlier today that the number of countries in favor of a military strike on Syria was now in double digits.
US President Obama will make the case for a military strike on Syria in six network television appearances tomorrow. He will also address the nation via a televised address on Tuesday. The President faces an uphill battle as he makes the case for a military strike at home. An overwhelming majority of Americans and Congressional members are against any form of military action on Syria - be it a focused strike, or for that matter, a three day campaign.
