US: Taliban Do Not Represent Afghan People
The ruling Taliban in Kabul do not represent the Afghan people but the United States does not want to choose the country's rulers as it pursues it war on global terrorism in the wake of recent suicide attacks on its soil, according to a US administration document.
The document, cited by an administration official Saturday, said "the Taliban do not represent the Afghan people who never elected or chose the Taliban faction."
"We do not want to choose who rules Afghanistan but we will assist those who seek a peaceful, economically developing Afghanistan free of terrorism," it added. "The international community must devote itself to stabilizing Afghanistan. The whole world will benefit from a stable Afghanistan at peace with its neighbors."
On Friday President George W. Bush reiterated his demand that the Taliban turn over Osama bin Laden and his network, which the United States says is responsible for the September 11 terror strikes on New York and Washington -- WASHINGTON (AFP)
