West Bank: Clashes after settlers attack mosque
Clashes erupted in the West Bank Friday following an arson attack on a mosque by settlers who also sprayed hate messages in Hebrew. The attack was carried out in a protest of a government plan to curb settlement building.
Locals hurled stones at Israeli soldiers sent to investigate the overnight incident at the mosque in the northern West Bank's Yasuf village. The soldiers responded with teargas.
The Israeli military said "it appears that the suspects wrote hate-filled messages in Hebrew in addition to burning bookshelves and a carpet." It added it "views the incident gravely" and that security forces are working to locate the perpetrators, the statement said.
