wfp welcomes turkish donation for dprk and djibouti
The United Nations World Food Programme today welcomed a US$300,000 contribution from Turkey, towards its operations in North Korea (DPRK) and Djibouti.
A much-needed US$100,000 will go to DPRK where, largely due to a funding shortage, WFP is currently only able to reach three percent of the population. The Government has indicated interest in having WFP expand its operation, and Turkey’s generosity will help provide food to some 1.9 million of the country’s hungry poor.
In Djibouti, Turkey’s US$200,000 donation will benefit drought-affected people, as well as refugees from nearby Ethiopia and Somalia, where years of conflict and unrest continue to disrupt lives.
“We are very grateful to the Government of Turkey for their generous donation, which comes at a crucial time for our operations in these two countries, particularly in DPRK where the lack of funds and incipient ‘lean season,’ are making life very difficult,” said WFP Deputy Executive Director John Powell, responsible for fundraising and communications.
This latest donation puts Turkey’s 2007 contributions to WFP at US$2.3 million. Turkey also remains one of WFP’s most important countries for procurement of food commodities for its global operations. In 2006, WFP purchased almost 100,000 tons of food, valued at US$27.8 million.
“Today’s donation confirms Turkey’s growing commitment to WFP’s mission to provide assistance to the world’s hungry poor,” Powell said.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency: each year, we give food to an average of 90 million poor people to meet their nutritional needs, including 58 million hungry children, in at least 80 of the world's poorest countries. WFP -- We Feed People.
