The A-Z of Obesity Treatment Dubai to showcase local case studies & practical approaches to obesity
Following the huge success of the Abu Dhabi A-Z of Obesity Treatment Conference in May 2009, the Dubai edition will have a major focus on methods of tackling childhood obesity. The event will take place on 14th October 2009 at the Qamardeen Hotel, The Old Town, Dubai.
Abu Dhabi University and Aim Medical Education (Aim ME) present part two of this significant series for medical practitioners on a topic considered as one of UAE’s major health issues affecting over 60 per cent of Emiratis. Taking a concise practical approach to obesity, and addressing other urgent issues including diet selection & enforcement and surgical referrals, healthcare practitioners will gain a deeper understanding of the subject and take home practical case study knowledge from experts.
Obesity is a major problem globally with more than 1 billion adults overweight, at least 300 million of them clinically obese. It is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability such as Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension and some forms of cancer. Statistics noted by a UAE Government programme to eradicate childhood obesity indicate that 12% of children in the country are overweight, and 22% of them are currently at risk of obesity.
“The UAE government is very active in battling obesity in the country through a series of programmes to eradicate this chronic disease. Childhood obesity will take centre stage at the conference and Dr Fatma Al-Attar from Dubai Health Authority (DHA) will reveal current National intervention programmes to tackle this issue,” said Dr Tahira Rashid, Conference Director of Medical Education, Aim Events.
“Obesity-related illnesses are considered the epidemic of the 21st century in the Middle East region, where lifestyle and easy access to fast food contribute heavily. This event is designed to create as much awareness amongst practicing medical professionals as possible on the health risks of obesity to the patient,” she added.
The conference is divided into two sessions with the morning session featuring relevant presentations from experts and practicing doctors such as: obesity in the UAE, the first line of treatment, obesity as a medical disease, the role of the dietician in patient compliance, medication and obesity surgery. The afternoon showcases results from a National study on childhood obesity and then launches into three patient case studies providing a detailed examinations and best practice for treatment.
“All the events Aim Medical Education organises will help healthcare and medical professionals to provide better patient services and gain the best practices by learning from regional and international experts. We ensure that our events not only meet and exceed the expectations of attendees, speakers and sponsors but also tackle topics of current importance to the region” she concluded.
