Canada’s Centurion Energy International Inc. has announced that drilling of the Al-Manzah #3 well in Tunisia had been temporarily suspended, due to drilling rig equipment failure.
According to the company, the well had reached a depth of 980 meters, almost two thirds of its projected total depth of 1,500 meters, when the drill string became lodged in the hole as a result of drilling rig equipment failure. Following repeated but unsuccessful attempts to retrieve the complete drill string, the lower portion of the well bore had to be cemented.
Centurion is expecting to utilize the top 300 meters of the existing well bore, once drilling operations resume.
The spudding of the Al-Manzah #3 development well was announced on 21 February 2001. The AMZ-3 well targets additional potential oil reserves in the Bou Dabbous Formation and was scheduled to be drilled in approximately 35 days.
Centurion's working interest in the Al-Manzah field has recently increased to 75 percent from 37.5 percent as the government company, ETAP, has elected not to participate in the development of the field. The increase in working interest is expected to positively impact Centurion’s reserves and decrease the timeframe required to make future field development decisions.
Contingent on the success of the Al-Manzah #3 well, the company stated that consideration will be given to drilling a new lateral from Al-Manzah #2 well bore deeper into the reservoir. Additional drilling locations and a gas re-injection scheme will also be considered.
According to company figures, the Al-Manzah field has produced over 700,000 barrels of oil since first production averaging over 2,000 bopd. The gross revenue from this production was approximately $18 million versus well costs of approximately four million dollars.
In Egypt, Centurion is progressing with development plans for the Al-Wastani field. A drilling rig— which has been contracted for three wells with an option to drill four additional wells—is scheduled to spud the first well, East Al-Wastani, in mid-April. Upon completion of the first well, the rig is scheduled to move to the Abu Monkar area, in the south of the concession, to drill two further exploration wells. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
