The Egyptian Minister of Transportation, Ibrahim Al-Demeiry, has instructed the National Railways Authority to execute maintenance operations for all local rail networks. The authority has also initiated new cleaning procedures for all trains used throughout the country, according to recent reports in the Cairo based Al-Ahram daily.
This plan aims at preparing local railway systems face the growing service demand, which is anticipated to increase even further in the future. Under the new program, two modern and air-conditioned trains will now run between Cairo and Marsa Matrouh as of mid-July.
At present, Egypt boasts a total of nearly 5,000 kilometers of train tracks, of which 42 km are electrified, connecting almost every town in the country. — (MENA Report)
