Head of the Egyptian Parliament, Ahmed Fathi, currently holds a list naming all local companies known to have imported spoiled wheat from abroad. The list, submitted by independent parliament member, Mohammed Badersheiny, names a total of 13 firms, according to reports in Al-Bayan daily.
Amongst the businesses listed are the Food Supplies Public Authority and the Food Holding Company, accused of importing spoiled wheat from the United States and other countries. Charges against these two enterprises were the cause of great embarrassment for the Minister of Supplies and Internal Commerce, Hassan Khadher, who had denied such conduct only two weeks ago.
Egypt imported a total of 4.3 million tons of wheat in the marketing year 2000-2001, of which the private sector was responsible for 1.6 million. More than 3.4 million tons, nearly three quarters of total imports originated in the United States, 256,000 tons came from France, and 523,000 tons came from Australia. ― (MENA Report)
