MORE than half of people working in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) want to quit their jobs, according to a new study.
It found 54.7 per cent of people would like to resign immediately and only 16.4pc intend to stay in their current job until they retire.
The poll, conducted by jobs website Bayt.com , said 45.2pc of people stated not being paid enough was the main factor in wanting to quit.
Nearly 45pc of those questioned said fear of being fired was one of the biggest issues facing workers with 75.9pc believing the turnover rate in their company was very or moderately high.
Providing a more competitive salary was considered the most important factor in retaining staff by 26.6pc of people surveyed, followed by performance recognition, 17.7pc, and good manager-employee relationships, 17.6pc.
Nine out of 10 people also stated that higher levels of job security would improve retention rates.
Most respondents said the average time they had spent in a job was no more than five years, with 27.7pc between two to five years, 20.5pc no more than two years and 22.2pc less than a year.
"With the results of our poll showing that retention levels are now lower than before, companies looking to hold onto their employees  should consider introducing more creative and sophisticated compensation and benefits structures to encourage them to stay," said Bayt.com vice-president of sales Suhail Masri.
"Simply providing regular positive reinforcement and recognition for a job well done would also seem to be a key motivator as would clear and transparent career progression guidelines and regular career development counselling and coaching conversations."
Data for the poll was collected online between January 15 and February 14 from 11,120 respondents in Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
