Crude steel production in the Middle East reached 12.9 million metric tons in 2003, up eight percent over 2002, according to the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI).
Production remained steady in December at an estimated 1.1 million metric tons. Iran produced 7.9 million metric tons of crude steel in 2003, making it the largest producer in the region.
World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the IISI stood at an estimated 80 million metric tons in December. Global production increased by 7.7 percent compared to December 2002 and by 6.7 percent year-to-date (YTD). — (menareport.com)
