Iran's environment protection organization has discovered an oil slick floating on one of the country's major pond in the southwestern Khuzistan province, state radio reported Wednesday.
"Some 100 hectares of this internationally known pond (Shadegan) are covered with oil patches which threaten the lives of a great number of animals as well as the vegetation," said Akbar Sepehr-Far, an official from the organization cited by the radio.
He said the oil came from a pipeline tha crosses the lake and called for an "urgent intervention" by the authorities to contain the extent of "this natural catastrophe." "In certain places, the lake is covered with 70 cm thick spots," he said –AFP.
