Helping to fulfill its mission to unlock human potential and supporting Qatar’s growing knowledge-based society, Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development today announced the launch of its annual “Discover Education City” campaign.
The admissions campaign kicked off in Qatar on Wednesday, October 5, with the aim to meet with the “best and brightest students” in the region, officials said today at a press conference held at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS Qatar).
Gerd Nonneman, Ph.D., Dean of SFS Qatar, opened the press conference launching the campaign. “We are proud to be hosting this event at Qatar Foundation with our sister universities at Education City.
“Qatar Foundation’s Education City is a clear example of how Qatar has proven itself as not only the choice and attraction for career opportunities, but as an international leader on the geo-political stage,” he said.
Speaking at the press conference, Khalid Al Menhali, Residence Hall Administrator at Qatar Foundation, talked about his experience as a graduate of Texas A&M University at Qatar and as a current employee at Qatar Foundation.
“As students attending one of the universities in Education City, we gain prestigious qualifications from top academic institutions. We learn in state-of-the-art facilities and learn from top practitioners in their fields. We graduate equipped to embark on a promising career path, and I am a prime example of how Education City graduates secure great job opportunities. All this is thanks to the vision of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser,” he added.
Al Menhali continued, “There are many benefits of being part of Qatar Foundation’s Education City, which is not limited to world-class education, but is also a fully integrated experience with the mission to unlock human potential.”
The Discover Education City campaign is an important annual event for Qatar Foundation and Education City. Qatar Foundation, and its partner universities have been collaborating together to recruit students for over six years.
“We believe it is important to hold this campaign annually to ensure that students and their parents get the right information about the universities, our programs, the admissions process as well as the opportunities available to students who come here,” said Maha Ayyash, Director of Admissions at Texas A&M University at Qatar. “The Discover Education City campaign complements the ongoing outreach efforts that Qatar Foundation and the universities are doing throughout Qatar. These include school visit programs, workshops for schools administrators, test preparation opportunities and summer enrichment and pre-college programs.
“There is a competitive pool of students looking for a high quality education in Qatar and in the region. Each of Qatar Foundation’s partner universities seek highly motivated students to be admitted to our programs. We use a wide range of inputs into the admission decisions, and each student admitted is judged to be capable in the full range of criteria essential to meet the high standards of a university degree,” said Ayyash.
Also speaking about the student life and university experiences, at the press conference were Noor Al Jassim, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar alumnus, who is currently working at Tasweeq, Qatar International Petroleum Marketing Company and Mohammed Al Nasr, a current student at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar.
Noor described how the unprecedented opportunities for both in and out of classroom learning helped prepare her to enter the workforce and succeed in a very competitive market.
“I chose to study at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar because it provided me with a world-class education, state-of-the-art facilities and research, within a multicultural environment.
“All the experiences that I have been through during my university years have helped me be who I am today. The top management and professors at Education City equip us with the right and useful skills that we gain in and outside of the classroom,” Noor said.
“Studying at a diverse community and interacting with students from different backgrounds and cultures helps us have a better understanding of life and the work atmosphere,” she added.
Mohammed Al Nasr emphasized the important benefits Qatari students get from having world-class universities in their home country.
“Qatari students should seize the opportunity to attend a university in Education City, because it offers them both worlds, western quality education while being home in Qatar. Furthermore, Qatar Foundation has invested in the well-being of international students, as they are now considered QF citizens,” said Mohammed Al Nasr.
“We are very lucky to be students at Education City. We have top-notch facilities and technology, amazing professors, most of which come from the mother campus, and last but not least we have a diverse mix of students, who come from different backgrounds and cultures.
“I truly believe that these universities produce well-rounded students, who are ready to enter the workforce and make the best of any experience,” he added.
The admissions campaign includes informational events for prospective students, their parents and school counselors in Qatar and the region. The Doha event is set to be held at 6pm at the Student Center in Qatar Foundation. After Qatar, the campaign travels to Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain.
Education City is the thriving home of world-class education by a host of international universities, foundation programs and innovative research projects. On site are six renowned universities offering undergraduate and some graduate degrees, carefully-selected to offer top programs in their respective area of teaching: Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar and Northwestern University in Qatar. Also participating in the campaign this year is the Academic Bridge Program. Qatar Foundation hosts several institutions that offer graduate degrees including the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies and European partners Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC Paris in Qatar), which will offer executive education programs, and UCL Qatar, which will offer masters degrees in museum studies, conservation and archaeology.
