Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has celebrated World Blood Donor Day by recognizing 300 top donors at a special gala event in Doha.
HMC’s Department of Laboratory and Pathology Medicine and Blood Donor Unit held its annual gala ceremony to mark the World Blood Donor day under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Public Health and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Health, Abdulla bin Khalid Al-Qahtani.
More than 300 voluntary blood donors were recognized in this ceremony for their vital contribution to the safe supply of blood and blood products in Qatar. Many major companies and community groups in Qatar organize regular blood donation drives and events. The event also recognizes individual donors who have also helped HMC reach its blood donation targets for the third year in a row.
HMC has the largest voluntary blood donations in the region with 100 percent of its supplies being met through this means and is a vital part of HMC’s delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.
As of December 2012, the total number of voluntary donors was 22504 which broke down to 21973 males and 531 females. A total of 303 field blood donation campaigns were conducted and there were 432 voluntary donors of platelets.
At the event, 20 female donors were recognized as well as 225 regular donors of platelets and seven being hailed as the most distinguished donors of blood and platelets.
Also 38 organizations including ministries, public organizations and cultural and social and youth groups who organized blood donation drives were also recognized at the event.
Sponsors for the 2013 gala event included Barwa Real Estate Company, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Petrochemical (Qapco) and Qatar Energy. The participation of such prestigious sponsors is recognition of HMC’s continuing and fruitful partnerships with some of Qatar’s biggest private and public institutions.
Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
With the slogan "Give the gift of life: donate blood", this year’s campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, focused on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.
