Hundreds of beach footballers will descend on the pristine beaches of Shatti Al-Qurum to take part in the action-packed Nawras Beach Football Tournament on 7 and 8 February 2013. Over the two days, 64 teams will face off in a knockout competition resulting in the top three teams and highest scoring player taking home prize money totalling 2,900 Omani Rials.
Anwar Salim Al Habsi, Nawras Events & Sponsorship Specialist, said, “We are ready for another exciting tournament with the opportunity for avid footballers to demonstrate their skills against each other and win some fabulous prizes. The sandy beach provides an ideal setting for the thrilling action and in addition to the action on the pitch there will be competitions and giveaways for spectators to enjoy as well as entertainment all day.”
He added, “Nawras is an integral part of Omani society and frequently supports community events both big and small. In response to popular demand, we are repeating our beach football tournament to offer opportunities for young people to participate in healthy sporting activities while encouraging families to come along too and cheer on their favourite team. This is going to be a fun weekend for everyone, whether they take part themselves or simply soak up the atmosphere.”
Registration will take place on 3 February and is open to participants aged 16 years and above. Team captains can enter their team name and list of participating players, by submitting the registration form at a dedicated booth outside the new Nawras flagship store at Muscat Grand Mall. Given the overwhelming response experienced previously, teams are advised to register early to avoid disappointment.
Nawras will provide the kits and in addition to the winning team receiving 1200 Omani Rials in prize money, the second placed team will receive 900 Omani Rials with third place collecting 600 Omani Rials. The highest scoring player will be rewarded with an individual prize of 200 Omani Rials.
Taking place on the beach next to the Intercontinental Hotel, the tournament will begin at 9am on both days and finish at approximately 5pm. The first three knockout rounds will take place on Thursday 7 February with the final eight teams competing in the championship rounds the next day. Matches will consist of two seven-minute halves with a penalty shootout to decide the winner if the game is drawn.
Each team can name up to seven players, five players including the goalkeeper and two substitutes. Referees will be provided by the Ministry of Sports Affairs and the tournament will be covered by Oman TV broadcasting live from the event. Teams are invited to call 9407 8180 for more information.
